Philippians: living for Christ and the gospel
George Bernard Shaw, the famous playwright, wrote, 'This is the true joy of life: being used up for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clot of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.' Yet so many of us feel like we're not being used up for any substantial purpose in life.
What are you living for and centering your life around? What makes you come alive? And is what you're centering your life around worthy of your one and only life?
The letter to the Philippians helps us to think through these three questions. Some describe the letter as a 'guide to joy'. That would be true - considering the amount of mention given to the theme of joy. But, as we explore this letter it more accurately emerges as 'a guide to purpose'. If you're hungry for purpose - desperate to find a centre worthy of your life - then Philippians is the place to start.
